Oh you want to buy a used one, then take a canon or nikon, like already said by the others. One lens should be enough at first, and like age said, a lense with a fixed mm is great, but sadly not very common, at least not as common as a 18-55 because its almost always inside a bundle.
Just be creative and try lots of different things, your SD can take it ;)
And for the love of all thats holy, shoot RAW :D

When I started I thought a tripod would be overkill since I just wanted to shoot some pictures in tourist style. But once I worked with Age’s tripod in Rhodes I don’t want to shoot any picture without any longer. Bought myself one now and it makes playing around with settings a lot easier.
I also started to use magiclatern, a hack or additional program for different cameras. If offers tons of additional functions and settings, which mostly can only be found on expensive cameras.

I personally use a Canon 1100D and I’m quite satisfied with it. As for most stuff these days: check youtube if you need help with something :P

Hey guys! Its been about a month and I thought I'd give you guys an update on things. I ended up going with a used Sony Alpha 300 that came with the basic 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens costing about $225.00 (165 Euros-ish) just to learn technique and what not. Results are not bad and images come out pretty decent. Speaking of such, I also thought I'd share some images that were captured in Charlotte,NC, the nearest major city about 20 minutes away from where I live. Feel free to critique to your heart's desire, good, bad, and constructive feedback are all accepted.

Also, I've been thinking of investing in some basic lenses that hopefully don't cost a fortune. Like a few of you have suggested, the "nifty fifty" equivalent for this camera seems quite enticing. Any others that you guys would like to suggests are welcome to comment. Quick note, this camera interestingly accepts mounts from Konica Minolta (listed under Maxxum, Dynax, and Alpha in NA, Europe, and Asia respectively) which can land quite the bargain.

Nice Obi. Glad to see you are enjoying yourself and the pictures are good too. Only thing I'd complain about is the Mint sign in one of them. I think it's in the way.

So like I entered a photography competition that the nearest major city was holding. Out of 135 entries and 35 other talented individuals, I ended up tying in the student submission category. Not bad I'd say.
