If this were a more private section I might have chosen discussed this. Maybe we can talk about it over a beer some time Age...

My goal in life is the same in video games; to gain more friends and improve my leading and speaking skills. However, being a successful pupil in a university is one of my high value targets that I want to focus on during my life. Afterwards, job is becoming important as well, in order to have a good life and family that will have fun all time. ^_^

I'm also in. Make it happen :)

My general overview and approach:

Problem: existentialism - ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Everyone is a precious flower that wants to bloom forever and avoid oblivion - it's hardwired. Psychological drive is towards leaving something that will outlive us. (Alternative: hedonism, a perversion; I avoid it). Things that will remain after we kick the bucket:
- tribe
- personal reputation
- commercial dynasty
- contribution to mankind
- offspring.

In the first world the tribe has been eliminated (I would like to give a big "fuck you" to consumerism, liberalism and Marxism for taking away our humanity). Religion and professional sport serve as substitute (opiate for the masses), not worth getting involved.

Commercial dynasty is only for a select few OCD personalities. Personal reputation is only for politicians, rock stars and actors.

Contributing to mankind and having offspring remain as options for most people on this forum. Murkey said, find an attainable goal and work towards it. A family member said, "Bite off more than you can swallow and chew like hell". Be sure to balance activities that recharge you vs those that drain you of energy, or you become a dried-out husk (or a reamed piece of meat).

Randy Pausch is one of the few people whose advice I would give to my hypothetical children, it's that valuable.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.--Randy Pausch.

Getting experience will allow you to select achievable goals, which - in the attempt of achieving them - will fulfill you, or at least not fuck you up more than anything else would. Burn your bridges whenever you can to get that motivation and be exposed to unforeseen challenges.

If I grew up in Northern Europe, and in my early twenties had to choose between studies and living like a hippy in South America for 1 year, I would obviously choose the latter. It will give perspective on the true nature of "meh" and "wow" (for better or worse, lacking in most 1st world societies).

I'll be frank here:

I am almost through my second year of University and I am quite unsure of what career I would like to pursue. Many people tell me that it will become apparent in my third year of University, but this does not alleviate my angst.

I study history and even though I really enjoy the topic, the style of learning is rather mundane and focuses on regurgitating other people's work. Which is hardly inspiring. The only real free reign I will receive to do my own research from primary sources will come about in my Dissertation. However much I look forward to it I approach it with much trepidation as I have only had one real chance to do a similar academic pursuit previously this year and that was minute in comparison to what is asked of me this time around.

My only real clear goal right now is to find a stable and happy relationship in which I will find a wife. This is quite detrimental to my emotional health in the majority of times (when I am not in a relationship) which perhaps isn't the most suitable goal for a person.

To conclude, I can proclaim that were I not in a relationship I would probably have complete and utter ambiguity in my life and that would create total despair. Even still, despite having a loving relationship, I am sure that concentrating my endeavours into this one goal is certainly unhealthy, as proven in the past. I can only continue my work at university and in my relationship and see if they lead to anything. If not then I will need a significant re evaluation of my life.

P.S. Writing this out has really put me in quite a downer as I have really emphasized to myself the fragility of my life despite my apparent happiness at the moment.
