Get some real headphones instead of gaming ones.
Let's look at what we have really. In "surround" headsets you either have several small and shitty speakers, or you have two relatively shitty speakers that rely on virtualised (fake) surround sound. The first concept has bad speakers that are so close together that they, for starters, will get all the sound fairly muffled together, and secondly it will make no real difference since they are all very close anyway. The second type is relying on idiots buying headphones with shitty speakers and fake surround created with software, which you could do on your own anyway.
My suggestion is to get a
good pair of real headphones (Sennheiser, Denon, Sony, AKG) and enjoy a much better audio quality not only in games, but for music, movies, and anything involving sound. If you need a mic to clip on I suggest looking at the
ModMic. I have one of those combined with a pair of
Denons and it works marvelously.
Seriously, gaming headsets are crap. If you absolutely need surround, you can virtualise it yourself with a proper pair of headphones.
