I need some.

I like to play PR loudly but don't want to be too anti-social towards my neighbours. So... Is the're anything I need to know when looking at headphones for PR? Does anyone have any recommendations?

My principle question is would a USB headset and virtual 7.1 surround sound be ok or is that all a croc of shit?

If I have surround sound speakers connected to my inbuilt sound card could I connect headphones to the 3.5mm jack on the speaker line out?

Finally what about USB sound cards are they also shit - is it just a case of you can tell how good headsets are by how expensive they are?

To start, I was looking at the lower end of the scale, would either of these options be acceptable just for playing PR?

Any advice would be great, Cheers, Murkey.

Get some real headphones instead of gaming ones.

Let's look at what we have really. In "surround" headsets you either have several small and shitty speakers, or you have two  relatively shitty speakers that rely on virtualised (fake) surround sound. The first concept has bad speakers that are so close together that they, for starters, will get all the sound fairly muffled together, and secondly it will make no real difference since they are all very close anyway. The second type is relying on idiots buying headphones with shitty speakers and fake surround created with software, which you could do on your own anyway.

My suggestion is to get a good pair of real headphones (Sennheiser, Denon, Sony, AKG) and enjoy a much better audio quality not only in games, but for music, movies, and anything involving sound. If you need a mic to clip on I suggest looking at the ModMic. I have one of those combined with a pair of Denons and it works marvelously.

Seriously, gaming headsets are crap. If you absolutely need surround, you can virtualise it yourself with a proper pair of headphones.

I bought last week a sound blaster recon3d omega wireless
Because I have a laptop this was one of the best sets available.
Its expensive, but the sound. WOW!

But if I had a PC I would bought a Internal Sound card, this will beat every Headset that's on the market now
If you have a 5.1 Headset, I really suggest this.

If you have a shit ass headset.
Choose something what Curry suggest or the Siberia v2.

that will be around 60 bucks, and if you want to spend a little more take a internal sound card
That will be around 100- 120 bucks.

But don't spend like 160 bucks only for a headset, yes the sound will be great.
but with a internal sound card and a headset of 60 bucks you will BLAST the headset of 160 away!

Like Age sad, A desktop mic works also combined with a good headset like AKG for example. You don’t need the mic in your mouth.
Mind that every usb connected headset uses its own software drivers and use resources like your CPU and memory and not any hardware on the sound card.

The sound blaster X-Fi has an improvement called crystallization and that made me hear footstep better without having to raise the volume so my ears pops near or in an vehicle.

Tested
Logitech Microphone https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/imag ... vabSnlNf9M
Razor Baracuda HP-1 http://store.razerzone.com/store/razeru ... .barracuda
AKG K 912 http://se.akg.com/akg-produkter-detail-se/k_912e.html
Corsair Vengeance 2000 http://www.corsair.com/en/gaming-periph ... adset.html

All are good but a little diference in how it sounds

Argh... must be dreaming again.

I Had the older version of these plantrons and I must say they are AMAZING. I could hear everything and they were amazing for music. I had them for about 2 years but the microphone broke so I had to get new ones.

I can tell you my story about looking for headset.

-Speedlink Medusa 5.1  = Can't hear untill 10-15m radius
-SteelSeries Siberia V2  = Can't hear untill they're right next to me
-Roccat Kave 5.1         = Can't hear untill 10m radius
-Sennheiser PC 350     = Can't hear untill 10m radius

I'm not sure is my hearing or my sound card or what, i just can't hear shit. (This is only PR, and what comes to my hearing it's above average)

The only reason i can hear shit now is because i got "Creative X-Fi, Ultra High" options working with PAX drivers to work.
Without that option i'm pretty much deaf.
